NEWBERRY — Newberry College professor Dr. Susan Shurden was nominated recently for the 2015 South Carolina Faculty Award for Service Learning.

This award is presented to a faculty member who has demonstrated a commitment to the integration of service learning into their curriculum, using innovative ways to connect students’ service with academics. The awards ceremony was held this spring at Benedict College where Shurden and Newberry College student Steven Arango were recognized for their community service.

In fall 2014, a need was recognized for income tax assistance for individuals within the Newberry County community. Shurden chose to take a leadership role in beginning an internship class through Newberry College whereby junior and senior accounting majors would receive Tax Wise training through the Cooperative Ministry in Columbia to be prepared to assist these individuals through the Newberry Literacy Council.

The course has been a success with 12 students participating and a 92 percent pass rate on the Tax Wise Certification test.

Barbara Chapman, director of the Literacy Council, estimates that more than 200 individuals in the Newberry County community had their taxes prepared by business students committed to linking their academic learning to community service. Shurden was instrumental in giving these students this opportunity and structuring this program to make it possible.

With over 25 years of teaching experience, Shurden has taught at Newberry College since fall 2013. Her area of expertise is teaching in the financial accounting area which includes courses in Principles of Financial Accounting, Auditing, and Corporate Finance.

Shurden’s major publishing interest to date has been the area of ethics, particularly in the accounting profession. Additionally, Shurden has 23 refereed proceeding publications since 2006 and attends conferences as a presenter on an annual basis.

She has been the co-editor of the Academy of Educational Leadership Journal since 2012. Shurden is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma Honorary Business Society, Beta Alpha Psi Honorary Accounting Fraternity, South Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants, National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and National Scholars Honor Society.
