NEWBERRY — Next Thursday will be your final chance to participate in a Newberry Soil and Water Conservation District gardening series class in 2017. The final class will teach participants about winterizing their gardens and growing a winter garden.

“I have not had a class like this before, I like giving people that option because some people may want to grow a winter garden, as opposed to a summer garden. This will also be helpful to those who have wanted to try growing a different type of produce,” said Danielle Himsey, district coordinator for NSWCD. “We will also be a little over a month away from winter, so the timing fits.”

The speaker will be Gary Peters, with the National Wild Turkey Federation. Himsey said he is knowledgeable on the subject of winter gardens and winterizing.

“He is going to talk about fruits and vegetables, that are hardy enough to withstand those temperatures, like turnips, lettuce, leeks,” Himsey said. “If you do not want to do a winter garden, winterizing will teach you how to prepare your soil. Help to keep the organic matter in your soil so it does not blow away, or wash away. You could add in organic matter and stuff like that, because that will help for the next year’s garden. How to take care of your garden when you are not gardening.”

This class will take place on Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at Piedmont Technical College, in order to attend you must RSVP to Himsey by text or email. All email RSVPs can be sent to newberrysoilandwater@gmail.com, all text RSVPs can be sent to 803-940-6001.

This class is free to all District members, and $10 for non-members. As always, there is an option to become a member for $50.

“Usually this is the smallest class because it is so close to the holidays. I usually have about 15 people or so. I think that is nice too, it is good to have a smaller crowd, a little more intimate, you can ask questions and things like that,” Himsey said.

She added that these classes are informal, and encourages those participating to speak up if they have something to add, or to ask a question.

The deadline to RSVP is Nov. 8, and that is to help Himsey know how much food to purchase.
