NEWBERRY — The five coaches from around Newberry County updated the Newberry County Touchdown Club on their teams on Monday along with what is being worked on for future games.

Whitmire High School

Head Coach Charlie Jenkins started out by saying they survived the first four weeks, sneaking in a win at home versus Great Falls. He said the three other teams they played were ranked in the top 10, and are very good teams.

“Coaches will understand this: game three we laid an egg against Ridge Spring Monetta. That was the most crushing defeat at Whitmire since I have been there, and I have been there four years. We played them five times in four years now. Every year they have been bigger than us,” Jenkins said. “It was a Hall of Fame night, we had 26 or 27 Hall of Fame members, beautiful night, was fired up about putting on a good show for them. I said we are going to beat them this time, and they beat our behinds 39-0.”

Jenkins said that after that they lost to Lewisville 62-6, but after that game he was happy with the team because they played from start to finish.

“This past Friday, I just breathed it in, it was homecoming, the weather was perfect, I think everyone got to play,” he said.

Looking ahead, Jenkins said they have five teams coming up that are more comparable with the Wolverines in size, and they have a chance to win, if they play well.

Mid-Carolina High School

Head Coach Louie Alexander said he is proud of his team, more so than any other team they have had. He said they scheduled five really good football teams, and he told the team last year they were going to play these five schools, and once they get into the Region they are not going to play anybody that is any better than the first five.

“Only thing you can do is let it kill your confidence, which is what happened last year,” Alexander said. “This is a different group of kids. They have not laid down and quit. We got better everyday, we are still trying to find our way up front.”

Newberry High School

The Bulldogs are sitting at 5-0. Head Coach Phil Strickland said while he is really proud of the way they are playing, and that they are 5-0, they cannot get satisfied or complacent and that they are not where they want to be.

“If we ever put together a whole game, we can be pretty darn good,” he said. “The kids are working hard, just need to learn to play a full game, then I will be satisfied. We played a pretty good game last week, last three minutes is when I was satisfied, when we moved the ball.”

Newberry Academy

Head Coach Benji Sease said that the Academy has had a pretty difficult start to their season. They are currently 0-3.

“Going into this season I knew it was going to be tough the first two weeks. This past Friday night, we laid a goose egg. A team we should have beat came and put a smack down on us,” he said.

Newberry College

A couple weeks back the Wolves opened up down at The Citadel, and Head Coach Todd Knight was proud of the effort his players gave. He was not happy with the outcome, but proud of the effort.

“There is an old saying in coaching: Do not let one game beat you twice. Well I know that saying and I let it happen to us. We went up to Virginia with a hangover from The Citadel, made too many mistakes, had several opportunities to win the game, but we could not overcome the mistakes. We came back home to open up the home schedule, had a come to Jesus meeting on Monday, a great week of practice, and we blew out Lynchburg,” Knight said. “So I guess that means mandatory come to Jesus meetings every Monday.”
