NEWBERRY — Johansen Precision Eye Care, located at 2433 Wilson Road, officially opened its doors to the community on Aug. 1, with the community’s vision being its number one mission.

Johansen Precision Eye Care is owned by Dr. Samuel Johansen, a native of Ninety Six. Johansen attended school at UNC Charlotte where he received his undergraduate degree in biology and continued on to optometry school in Memphis, Tenn.

“I had actually planned on setting up a practice in Charlotte, but I just didn’t see eye to eye with the doctor that I was going to be purchasing the practice from there and so one thing led to another and I ended up down here. I started out at Walmart and during my time there I just really enjoyed working with the people here in Newberry and just fell in love with the place,” said Johansen.

Johansen has another practice in Ninety Six and said that he had planned on continuing to work at Walmart until the practice in Ninety Six grew enough.

“Things just went so well here and I really enjoyed working here so I decided to set up a practice here (Newberry) as well,” said Johansen. “We offer comprehensive eye surgery, which is basically anything but surgery. If you need surgery we can tell you where to go from there, but we do routine eye exams, we sell both glasses and contact lenses. We treat red eyes and we offer specialty contact lenses, both hard and soft.”

At Johansen Precision Eye Care, Johansen can also provide contact lenses for select patients that they are able to sleep in. He also provides medical eye care, treating dry eyes, glaucoma, diabetes, etc.

“As far as what we offer, I try to do things differently than most eye care professionals do. I try and focus on quality care as opposed to quantity. So, your typical eye exam you spend about 10 minutes with the doctor, here you spend around 20 minutes with the doctor. We book 30 minute time slots so that I have the time to spend with patients to make sure I answer all of their questions and that they understand everything we talk about,” said Johansen.

He added that by taking the time with his patients it will be more personal instead of getting a patient in and out of the door.

Johansen Precision Eye Care is open on Tuesdays from 8:20 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Wednesday from 8:20 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8:20 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 803-276-6959 or visit www.johansenpec.com for more information.

“We try to make it as easy as possible for our patients. We have lots of openings and a lot of times people can get same day appointments and as long as there is an availability we do accept walk-ins,” said Johansen.

Johansen said he and his team have been well received by the community in their first month.

“The first month has been the biggest month I’ve had since I’ve been practicing, so that’s been really good,” said Johansen.

Johansen also commended his team and how he enjoys coming to an office where everyone gets along.

“We’ve got a really good team here. It took me a little while to find the employees I’ve got now, but the employees I have now are really good. We’re not perfect and everyone makes mistakes, but we all try our best. We get along really well and something that is very different about our office is that we’re a very Christian-based office. We start every day with a prayer and it’s something that is very important to us. It’s nice to work in an office where we all share the same beliefs and have that in common.”
