NEWBERRY — The Newberry Arts Center is getting ready for a new season of classes by offering a variety of pottery, watercolor, painting parties and a new quilting class for members of the community.

The NAC will be offering beginning, advanced and intermediate and kids pottery. Advanced and intermediate pottery classes begin on Sept. 14. All other classes will start the following week on Sept. 19.

Anne Hightower-Patterson White will be teaching two watercolor sessions and Marjorie Huwa will be teaching two six-week sessions of oil painting. There are also fun activities planned for this year’s Oktoberfest.

“We’re also encouraging folks who are artists and would like to try their hand at teaching or who have taught art to contact us with ideas of other classes we could offer if somebody is interested,” said Marquerite Palmer, arts and special program coordinator.

A quilting class taught by Sandy Schaffer will be a six-week class for ages 16 and up. During the class students will complete two projects, a quilt as you go medium sized quilt and a 14 inch x 11 inch tote. Palmer added students can either bring their own machine or use a machine provided by NAC.

The first painting party will be held Sept. 11, where students will be painting a fall tree followed by a leaf cut-out on Sept. 25.

“Something that is different is that on Oct. 6, the night before Oktoberfest, we will be painting a fancy pumpkin. We don’t normally do Friday night painting parties unless people book them, so that will be one for guests coming in for Oktoberfest for them to enjoy,” said Palmer. “We love for people to give us ideas of things they want to paint and we’re always here to schedule private painting parties and kids birthday parties, too. We can also do private pottery parties if anyone is interested.”

Palmer said that the Newberry Arts Center tries to keep prices for the classes as low as possible, adding that scholarship money is available for those wanting to participate in a class.
