NEWBERRY — The Newberry Fire Department recently awarded Ashley Livingston and Tyler Havird $2,000 scholarships through the Newberry Fire Department’s Recruitment/Retention Scholarship Program.

Livingston and Havird have been Explorers with the department for several years. Havird is attending Newberry College where he is pursing a degree in Criminal Justice while Livingston is attending pharmaceutical school at Presbyterian College.

Livingston is also a volunteer firefighter in Newberry County and Clinton Public Safety. Both scholarship winners have completed the Newberry County Career Center Firefighter Program.

Scholarship applications are reviewed by non-fire department personnel and are graded on a point system. The scholarship program is open to any volunteer or Explorer with Newberry City who has met all criteria for active status for at least six months.
