NEWBERRY — The Fifty Friends Team Relay for Life – American Cancer Society met May 27 at Bethlehem Garden Community Center and presented the 2016 awards.

During the awards ceremony, co-chair Emma Crump welcomed those in attendance and thanked the volunteer for helping make a difference in the lives of those touched by cancer. The Rev. Richard Crump, read the scripture and Deacon Roy McClurkin prayed.

The occasion for the gathering was explained by the Rev. Johnny M. Scurry. Brunell Gray encouraged those in attendance to keep the faith and continue fighting to defeat cancer.

Emma Crump gave the financial report for 2016. A total of $24,336.79 was reported for the year. Co-chair Lisa Toland and Richard Crump presented trophies and plaques to the following:

First place went to Bethlehem Baptist Church, which reported $2,013; second place went to Seekwall Baptist, which reported $1,450; third place went to Antioch Baptist with $1,415; fourth place went to Little Beaverdam Baptist with $1,400; fifth place went to Belmont Baptist with $1,395; and sixth place went to Bush River Baptist for raising $1,210.

Deacon McClurkin presented Savion Smith, 10, a plaque on Dec. 10, 2016, during service at Renwick Grove Baptist Church for raising $2,800 in honor of his grandmother Rozell Caldwell.

Certificates of appreciation were presented to all participants: Antioch Baptist, Belmont Baptist, Bethlehem Baptist, Brown Chapel A.M.E., Bush River Baptist, Elisha A.M.E., New Enoree Baptist, Friendship Baptist Church, James Hopewell Baptist, Lever Chapel A.M.E., Little Beaverdam Baptist, Metropolitan Baptist, Miller Chapel A.M.E., Mt. Moriah A.M.E., Mt. Zion Baptist, New Hope Baptist, Old Beaver Dam Baptist, Pleasant Grove A.M.E., Renwick Grove Baptist, St. Matthew Baptist, St. Vaughnville Baptist, Seekwell Baptist, Trinity A.M.E., Welch Zion Baptist, Daughters of Meridian OES #247, Little River Baptist, New Vision Ministry, Sims Chapel Baptist, Providence A.M.E., Nu Image Beauty Salon – Rev. Rosette Gallman, Benzina Wicker, Natalie Senn, Ruby Caldwell and Debra Mayes Gamble.
