NEWBERRY — Pi Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha presented scholarships to Newberry School District high school seniors during the recent senior night activities.

Each recipient earned a $750 scholarship. Applications are made available through the guidance department of each area high school and a member of the sorority’s scholarship committee.

Scholarships were awarded to Rendell Murrell Gilmore, who will be attending USC in the fall and majoring in nursing; Danielle Nicole Reeder who will be attending USC and plans to major in journalism and communication and minor in sports and entertainment management; and Haley Clare Hughes will be attending Presbyterian College and majoring in Pharmacy.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was established in January 1908. The local chapter was charted November 16, 1985. The sorority works with communities through service initiatives and progressive programs relating to education, family, health, and business.

Scholarship committee for 2016-17 included Bennie Mae Brown, Mary Suber, Eddie Caldwell, Fannie Shelton and Emily Crump-Saddler.
