NEWBERRY — Newberry Academy’s Junior Civitan was recently recognized at the South Carolina Junior Civitan District Convention, which was held in Myrtle Beach from May 5 through May 7.

The Academy’s Junior organization, which consists of 61 members, received a first place “Club Spirit” Award for their involvement in All-District events and a first place “Special Friends” Award for their participation assisting with the Special Olympics as well as second place awards for “Collection Selection” for hosting their canned food drive; “Environmental Project of the Year” for their school garden project; and “Community Project of the Year” Award for their assistance with the Newberry County Disabilities Special Needs Board’s Spring Gala “Lights, Camera, Pride.”

Junior Amy McJunkins was recognized as the District’s Female Junior Civitan of the Year for outstanding leadership and service to the organization.

During the convention, elections were held for Junior Civitan District Officers for the upcoming 2017-18 school year. Five Newberry Academy students were elected to top positions, including the District’s top positions of Governor and Deputy Governor.

The new Junior Civitan District Officers included Amy McJunkins, Governor; Kathryn Wilbanks, Deputy Governor; Ashlin O’Connell, Area 3 Lieutenant Governor; Sara Gray, Public Relations Coordinator; and Amber Suber, Correspondence Secretary.

In honor of McJunkins’ position, the District’s Junior Civitan Governor’s banner will hang in the front lobby of Newberry Academy for the duration of the 2017-18 school year.

Junior Civitan is a world-wide organization that has over 11,000 members across 350 clubs and four continents. Newberry Academy’s Junior Civitan club works to give students in Grades 7 through 12 the opportunity to develop initiative and leadership and to encourage them to live a fuller life enriched by selfless service to others.

The club takes on a variety of school, community and environmental projects throughout each school year.
