NEWBERRY — Newberry County 4-H held another successful soap box derby Aug. 8 at the Newberry Clemson Extension Office beside Piedmont Technical College.

4-H Agent Alana West said they had about 12 kids to participate with 18 cars overall. Similar results from the first Newberry race were found with Newberry’s Chase Minick taking home another first place in Class A. Union’s Dristan Trammell took home first place in Class B.

An award for driver of the race was voted on by all of the drivers and was given to Cameron Hines of Union.

West said they had another ‘rookie’ driver to participate in the race, Grace Green of Prosperity. Green finished fourth out of the 12 participants in Class A.

“She was all smiles and asked her parents for her own car,” West said.

Kiblers Garage was the sponsor of the race. All sponsor money and all race registration fees are put into the pot of money that the drivers win.

Newberry 4-H will host another derby car build this fall or winter. Cars cost about $135 to build, not including the paint jobs.

West can be contacted for more details at 276-1091, ext. 111 or awillin@clemson.edu.
