NEWBERRY — Harlie H. O’Connell, circulation manager at the main library of the Newberry County Library system, was awarded the Friends of the South Carolina State Library Public Library Employee Excellence Award for 2016-17.

She was nominated by the Friends of the Newberry County Library System. In their nominating letter the local Friends organization wrote the following:

“Patrons have a positive experience while being helped by Mrs. O’Connell. She has the ability to handle problems encountered and exhibits patience while doing so. Her interactions with everyone is always professional, whether patrons of any age, library staff or Friends of the Library members.”

The FOSCL nomination application states that the statewide award is intended to recognize individuals who are critical to helping and supporting South Carolina public libraries, enrich the lives of all South Carolinians and without whom South Carolina public libraries would be substantially diminished.”

Attending the statewide meeting in Columbia on April 6 with O’Connell were her husband, her parents, the Newberry County Library director and the local friends co-president.
