NEWBERRY — The first stop on the Horseshoe Tour comes to Newberry this weekend with the annual SummerFun Tournament at Marion Davis Park.

The tournament features some of the best horseshoe players in the world, competing in 40’ and 30’ Classes.

The Men’s 40’ Prime Class will feature Dan Watson from Alabama, who is ranked No. 2 in the world.

The 30’ Prime Class is one that tournament director Ron Taylor calls “one of the toughest in the world” with four of the top 10 ranked players and headlined by Joan Elmore from Mount Juliet, Tenn. Elmore, an eight-time world champion, is currently ranked No. 1 in the world.

Debra Brown from Bristol, Vt., who is currently ranked No. 8 in the world and was the 2015 world champion, is also in the field. The star-studded class also includes Kathy Brazier from Alabama, currently ranked No. 3 in the world, and Shalee Cason from Florida, who is currently ranked No. 4 in the world.

In all, players from 12 states will converge on Newberry this weekend, coming from as far away as Arizona, Missouri, New York, Massachusetts, Florida, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Newberry is the only stop on the Horseshoe Tour that has hosted a tournament each year since its inception in 2009. Future 2017 Tour stops include Clarksville, Tenn., Winnemucca, Nev., and Morgan City, La.
