NEWBERRY — A second 4-H soap box derby will be held Aug. 8 at the Newberry Clemson Extension Office beside Piedmont Technical College.

Alana West, Newberry County 4-H agent, said a race was set for Aug. 8 in Lexington, but the agent there took a job in another state.

“Since the race was still on the calendar, we will have it in Newberry where there is a 4-H agent to help,” West said. “We are expecting kids from Newberry and Union again and hoping for participants from Lexington this go round.”

The first race in Newberry was held July 18 with 12 participants and 17 cars competing in the Class A and Class B races. Stock cars (Class A) typically come with a kit to put them together and plastic wheels for the car. Class B has ball-bearings, West said.

West said the practice round will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday with the race at 10 a.m. The race should finish between noon and 1 p.m. The track for the competition in Newberry is about 150 feet long, she said.

The fee to participate is $10 per car. Participants can register up until the day of the race. Participants must be between 5 and 18 years of age.

Kiblers Garage is sponsoring the race and an anonymous donor has sponsored the trophies.

A winner will be named from both Class A and Class B. West said they also will give a driver of the race award to be voted on by all the drivers.

Although there is a cost for 4-Hers to participate, West encourages the community to come watch the races.
