NEWBERRY — Individuals with disabilities interested in returning to work or increasing their earnings are invited to a free workshop Aug. 4 that will focus on dispelling myths about disability benefits and work.

Disability Benefits & Employment: Make it Work for You! will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 4 at the SC Works Upper Savannah office, 833 Main St. in Newberry.

A resource fair will be held after the workshop for individuals to connect directly with community organizations.

Lynne Bosma, director of employment programs with Able South Carolina, said there is a lot of misinformation given to those with disabilities regarding benefits and working.

“This workshop is one facet of a statewide initiative looking to break the employment barriers of people with disabilities in South Carolina,” said Bosma. “Employment rates for people with disabilities in South Carolina remain far lower than individuals without disabilities. Individuals that attend the workshop will leave with the tools to help them gain employment, which will ultimately invigorate the local and state economy.”

The workshop is being presented in conjunction with the SC Employment Works Taskforce, a coalition of over 20 employers, state, and private agencies working to address the employment barriers of people with disabilities in South Carolina.
