NEWBERRY – Newberry Elementary School students put their coloring skills to good use recently as part of the FAST (Families and Schools Together) program.

Students Kattie Gamez and Ja’Nylin McDowell won a coloring contest given as part of the recent Midlands Gives Campaign. They colored pictures of the AFLAC duck and entered them into the contest as participants in the FAST Program at NES.

As contest winners, Kattie and Ja’Nylin received $10, T.D. Bank coupons as an incentive to open a savings account at the bank.

Gamez learned of the contest through NES Parenting Coordinator Sheila Brown. “I used to color and color and all that practice paid off,” said Gamez.

“I learned a lot about drawing at school and in church,” said McDowell. “We had fun with the contest.

The Newberry County Literacy Council, headed by Barbara Chapman, partners with Newberry Elementary School to provide the on-going FAST Program at the school which seeks to build strong relationships between the school and families.

“We are so proud of these girls. They put their creativity to good use and showed how we accept nothing less than the best at NES,” said Brown.
