NEWBERRY — The John Wagner and Friends concert is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Newberry Opera House. The program is a continuation of the John, Janet and Jazz programs that began in 2002, and is the 13th in the series.

The concert is presented by Dr. John W. Wagner, clarinetist and flutist, and professor of music emeritus at Newberry College; and Kimberlee Turnbough, piano instructor and staff accompanist at Newberry College. Turnbough received a master of music degree in piano performance from the University of South Carolina.

Assisting Wagner and Turnbough will be Dr. Brenda Leonard, a faculty member at North Greenville University and principal cello with the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Leonard earned a doctor of musical arts degree in cello from USC, studying with Robert Jesselson.

The first half of the program will include Prelude for solo clarinet, written by contemporary Polish composer Krzysztof Pendereski; Soliloquy and Celtic Dance by Wagner; and Beethoven’s Trio for Piano, Clarinet, and ‘Cello, Opus 11.

After a brief intermission the remainder of the program will feature a selection of popular songs played in a jazz style by Wagner on clarinet and flute, assisted by Shawn Hair, piano; Jared Poole, bass; and Martin Giles, drums. Vocalist Millie Keefe Black will also be featured on several of these pieces. Black, Hair, Poole and Giles all have ties to Newberry College. The program is free to the public.
