Anundson added to Bellator Light Heavyweight tournament

June 3, 2014

THACKERVILLE, Okla. — Former Newberry College wrestling All-American Kelly Anundson has been added to the bracket for the Bellator MMA 2014 Summer Series light heavyweight tournament and will start his quest for the title June 6.

Anundson has a 7-2 career record as a professional, including a second round win by submission (neck crank) over previously undefeated Volkan Oezdemir in his Bellator debut at Bellator 115 in Reno, Nev., on April 4.

Featured on the reality television series The Ultimate Fighter earlier this year, Anundson was a two-time All-American at Newberry and has won multiple medals at the World Grappling Championships.

To start the Bellator MMA 2014 Summer Series light heavyweight tournament, Anundson faces Rodney Wallace (21-8-1) at the WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla., just north of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. The fight is part of the undercard, which will be broadcast on www.Spike.com beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern.

“A lot of guys wait for this their whole career, but I was fortunate enough to get and win the right fights at the right times,” said Anundson in an interview with Team Guardian. “I’m very honored that Bellator chose me for it and I think it validates my career in a way. There are lots of guys signed with Bellator who aren’t in the tournament. (Wallace has) fought in the biggest shows in front of a lot of people, so he has that big-show experience. As far as talent, I don’t think he’s better than me at anything. But he has more experience.

“I definitely have the hardest quarterfinal fight,” Anundson said. “But after I beat him, it’s going to be easy for me.”
