Royals too much for Wolves as Newberry falls 7-2

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Newberry women’s tennis team picked up a lone singles and lone doubles win in a 7-2 loss at Freedom Park on Friday against Queens University.

The Royals (9-2, 4-1 SAC) rolled by the Wolves (12-7, 7-3 SAC) in much of the day’s matches.

Newberry’s lone doubles win came at No. 3 as sophomore Tara Lamers and freshman Kelly McManus knocked off Farina Rafiq and Paige Ernest 8-3.

Singles play did not see the Wolves fare much better as senior Ariel Strong earned the lone team point in a three-set victory over Jessee Clauson.

Saturday’s match

The Newberry women’s tennis team eased to a 6-3 victory over the Mars Hill Lions on Saturday at the Hart Tennis Complex.

Newberry (13-7, 8-3 SAC) took two points from Mars Hill (7-9, 5-5 SAC) in doubles play, with victories at No. 2 and No. 3.

The duo of senior Marina Ziehe and sophomore Vanessa Ortiz earned an 8-2 win over Jade Henke and Anna Rickenbaker at No. 2 doubles. No. 3 doubles saw Natalie Hilbig and Grace Diepenbrock fall to Newberry sophomore Tara Lamers and freshman Kelly McManus by an 8-1 score.

Singles saw senior Romina Adum battle to a three-set victory at No. 2 over Lucy McLaurin, while Ortiz also needed three sets to drop Rickenbaker at No. 3.

Senior Ariel Strong dropped only one game to Hilbig at No. 5, while Ziehe cruised to a straight sets victory over Diepenbrock at No. 6.

The Wolves host Limestone on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
