NINETY SIX — Welcoming back Octavia Grandy from a knee injury for her first game this season, the varsity Newberry High School Lady Bulldogs scored the first 11 points in their game at Ninety Six High Friday evening. Their 81-54 victory over the eighth-ranked Lady Wildcats was their fourth straight win of 2014.
Only two Ninety Six players combined to score seven points for them in the first quarter while five Newberry players, including the four points apiece of Grandy and Nigeria Davis, scored 17 points in the same time frame.
The Lady Bulldogs took a 27-16 advantage into the locker rooms eight minutes later.
Ninety Six scored a team-high 12 points in the third quarter which was greatly aided by converting eight of their 12 free-throw attempts. For the night, Newberry went to the charity stripe seven times, missing only one attempt.
Having a 43-28 lead after three quarters, Newberry held Ninety Six to only two points in the final quarter.
The Lady Wildcats made 10 baskets from the field, with one of them being a three-pointer, while 22 field shots were made by Newberry.
Tyshira Bates and Grandy scored in each of the four quarters of play as they finished with 15 and 12 points respectively.
Arnasia Boyd scored nine points while Davis scored six first-half points.
Esha Mathis and Kelsey Felks scored four points apiece for Newberry.
While Bates made two baskets from behind the three-point arc, Fatima Sims made the other Newberry basket from there as she finished with three points to round out the Newberry scoring.
While Ninety Six drops to 13-2 on the season after suffering a loss to Mid-Carolina as well, Newberry improves to 6-7 on the season.
Newberry has three games on their schedule this week all at home. They will entertain Batesburg-Leesville on Tuesday while the first half of region play will wrap up on Friday with Mid-Carolina.
The Lady Bulldogs will play their last non-region game of the year on Saturday as they will go up against Fairfield Central.
