NEWBERRY — The Newberry High Lady Bulldogs improved to 3-2 on the season after picking up a 46-33 victory over Clinton in the Scott Gym on Friday.
Tyshira Bates hit the team’s only three-pointer in the first quarter as the Lady Bulldogs had already built up a 15-4 lead after the opening eight minutes.
Bates’ six points in the second quarter matched what the entire Clinton team scored in the same time frame as Newberry took a 27-10 lead into the locker rooms.
Fatima Sims outscored the entire Lady Red Devils’ team in the third quarter, 9-7, as Newberry took a 36-17 lead into the final quarter.
Clinton’s Meleaka Neal scored 10 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter. This was the only time Clinton did not end a quarter having only scored in single digits.
Bates and Sims each ended the night with 13 points.
Nigeria Davis scored six points, including going 4-of-6 from the second-half free-throw line.
Arnasia Boyd, Alia Hunter and Kesley Felks each scored four points while the Newberry scoring ended with the two points of Maya Miller.
Newberry will host Spartanburg on Tuesday in the Scott Gym beginning at 6 p.m.
Fans attending the game are asked to bring an unwrapped toy that evening or to the Newberry Middle School on Monday as the two schools are combining forces for a holiday toy drive.
