NEWBERRY COUNTY — Fourteen teachers of the year from across the county were recognized for this school year Nov. 7 at Newberry Middle.

The district’s teacher of the year is Tami Stewart who teaches at the Newberry County Career Center. She teaches six classes including game design and development, Accounting 1, Accounting 2, business and personal law, digital desktop publishing and digital multimedia.

“I did not make this journey alone,” said Stewart. “I had so much support along the way.”

“Terry Murphy mentored me my first year,” said Stewart about a fellow teacher. She also thanked the career center director Buddy Livingston for his support.

She thanked her children for allowing her to borrow their Legos for classroom projects.

“I want my students to think critically about their world and discover their purpose,” said Stewart.

April Sessions from Newberry Elementary is the district’s teacher of the year runner-up. She teaches music at Newberry Elementary as well as one day a week at Whitmire Community.

Newberry High’s Lucy Lee, Reuben Elementary’s Cara Morris and Whitmire Community (Middle and High) Beverly Wood were also honored.
