Are you one who cannot believe we are “Oh, so close to Christmas?” Here at your Chamber we have been busy making preparations for these wonderful upcoming holidays.
First, we will usher in Thanksgiving, which is such a wonderful time for families. So much so that your Chamber is reluctant to get too involved in Christmas until we have gotten through Thanksgiving.
However, the real truth is simply this: if one does not plan ahead, many will be disappointed. So here is a slate of events we are working on just for your participation and enjoyment.
If you are a downtown Newberry merchant, it would be to your advantage to enter the Newberry Christmas Window Display competition where independent judges will determine the three best windows. Those selected will win $300 for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third place, courtesy of sponsor Joe Trainor of Stokes-Trainor.
This competition is being provided to encourage folks to experience downtown shopping in Newberry. Judging will take place on Nov. 21 and winners will be announced on the following evening at the downtown Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Applications can be obtained by visiting the Chamber office.
A new Chamber offering, sponsored by Newberry Electric Cooperative, is the countywide Lights of Newberry County. Yes, you can win money for your decorations, but you must enter. This can easily be done by stopping at your Chamber and filling out an application.
Three categories will be judged and each winner will take home $150, so if your outside decorations fit any one of the three categories of Traditional Christmas, Children’s Christmas or The Spirit of Christmas, you will want to complete an application. Judging will take place on Dec. 16, but you cannot win unless you enter at your Chamber.
Of course, you do not want to miss your Newberry County Chamber’s Tour of Homes. Yes, this year promises to be an excellent display of fantastic homes in our county, where on Dec. 14 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. we have secured five homes we feel will delight even the Grinch of your family.
This year, in keeping up with our commitment of offering a local church, Newberry College’s Wiles Chapel will be open as we remember the “Reason for the Season.” The tour cost per individual is $20, and tickets can be purchased at either the Newberry Opera House or your Chamber at 1209 Caldwell St. on the first floor of Community Hall. Groups of 10 or more can enjoy the tour for only $18 per person.
So the bottom line is simply this: The season is fast approaching and if you plan ahead, you can include these activities into your schedule. By participating you just may have your best holiday season ever. Why not stop by your Chamber and let Liz, Michelle, or me tell you how you might get involved in your Chamber and in this season’s holiday events? If you cannot stop by, please call 276-4274. We cannot wait to talk to you.
