NEWBERRY — A 39-year-old Prosperity woman was charged with reckless driving after she struck a Newberry County Sheriff’s Deputy with her vehicle around 11:40 p.m. Monday on U.S. 395 near Mendenhall Road.

Tonya Dawn Crapps, of 55 Dudds Lane, was driving a green Mustang that hit a Newberry County Sheriff’s deputy who was on the scene of a vehicle-deer collision.

The Mustang approached the accident scene, left the roadway and then struck the deputy’s patrol vehicle and crossed a ditch toward the deputy. The deputy attempted to avoid the oncoming vehicle but couldn’t.

The deputy was treated and released from Newberry Hospital for minor injuries.

“This is another example of the many dangers that law enforcement officers face,” said Sheriff Lee Foster. “This seemingly routine call could have turned deadly had it not been for the quick actions of the deputy to avoid the oncoming car.”
