NEWBERRY — While repairing a water leak along Wilson Road near Captain D’s Tuesday morning, the city hit an old service line, breaking it off underground and causing a gas leak, according to Stan Bryson with the Clinton-Newberry Natural Gas Authority.

Around 11 a.m., while repairing a water leak, Marc Regier, utilities director for the City of Newberry, said the crew smelled gas and alerted CNNGA to figure out where the leak was coming from.

Regier said as the city was repairing the water leak, they somehow created a cavity for gas to come through.

As of 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, Bryson said the gas had been shut off in the area for repairs to the line.

“Nothing was in jeopardy, and no one was in any harm,” Bryson said.

Crews from Clinton Newberry Natural Gas, Newberry City Police, Newberry City Fire and Newberry Utilities were on the scene.
