SUMTER — Newberry sophomore Fernando Espana strung together an impressive run of matches at the 2013 USTA/ITA Division II Southeast Regional at the Palmetto Tennis Center from Sept. 27-29, as the Spaniard reached the quarterfinal round of the Men’s Open Singles B Flight.
Espana was one of four Newberry men’s tennis players in action over the weekend, as he was joined by senior Michael Saunders, senior David Sons and junior Carlos Nicolopulos. Competing as individuals in a two flight bracketed tournament, the Wolves opened up the 2013-14 year against some of the best players in the Southeast Region.
Saunders competed in the Men’s Open Singles A Flight and fell to the consolation bracket after dropping his first round match to Adi Malicbegovic of Columbus State.
The Kiwi bounced back in the first consolation round as he defeated Mateus Camasmie of North Georgia in straight sets before advancing to the consolation third round after Victor Guimaraes of Georgia Regents Augusta withdrew from the tournament.
Saunders’ final match of the weekend came in the third round as he was knocked out of the tournament by Arthur Andrade of Georgia Regents Augusta.
Espana led the charge for the Wolves in the B Flight as he toppled Justen Louis of Flagler in straight sets, before a second straight sets victory over Rodrigo Alatorre of Belmont Abbey in the round of 32. Bernado Bertolucci of Lander fell in straight sets to Espana in the round of 16. Espana saw his run end in the quarterfinals as Mattia Campus of Georgia College advanced to the semifinals.
Sons fell to Campus in the round of 64, before dropping a match to Odhran O’Sullivan of Lincoln Memorial in the consolation second round. Columbus State’s Derrick Taylor got the best of Nicolopulos in the round of 64, but Nicolopulos found himself in the win column as he topped Alatorre in straight sets. In the consolation third round it was Erskine’s Dean Harris who came from a set down to best Nicolopulos in three sets.
In the Men’s Open Doubles B Flight, Sons and Espana topped Zach Grooms and Tom Sizeland of Coker, before falling to Inaki Irriberri and Paul Michael Calhoun of Anderson in the round of 16.
