Annual Jazz on the Lawn is Sunday

September 25, 2013

NEWBERRY — Newberry College’s, College Street Jazz Connection will be holding the third annual Jazz on the Lawn event at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The event began two years ago and is a fundraiser for the College Street Jazz Connection. The College Street Jazz Connection is the collective name for all of Newberry College’s jazz combos.

Small jazz combos are an integral part of the jazz program at Newberry College. In the past they have represented Newberry College at the Down Home Jazz Festival in Dothan, Ala., the Elmhurst Jazz Festival in Chicago, Ill., and the Crescent City Jazz Festival in New Orleans, La.

They received excellent or superior ratings at these festivals and students have received Outstanding Soloist Awards at all of these events. The College Street Jazz Connection is directed by Associate Professor of Music Dr. Barry McGinnis.

The event will take place on the lawn in front of the Alumni Music Center on the Newberry College campus. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available for purchase and donations to the combo will gladly be accepted. All proceeds go toward buying new music for the ensemble and funding their trips to jazz festivals.

Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and join us for an afternoon of jazz.
